PPE Contaminant Exposure

Clean turnout gear is lighter weight, lasts longer, and is more visible than dirty turnout gear. But having dirt, soot, and other debris clinging to your gear also represents a safety hazard, especially after chemical and other contaminant exposure. Many outer shell fabrics will degrade when exposed to corrosives such as strong acid solutions. The longer the residence time of the contaminant, the more potential damage to the fibers. Chemicals can also adversely affect other components, including but not limited to the thermal liner, moisture barrier, and trim. For example, the silver striping on the triple trim is susceptible to being etched away by chemicals.

The best response after chemical and other contaminant exposure is to decontaminate the gear as soon as possible following the exposure. We recommend that the manufacturers of the exact chemical be contacted for specific recommendations on decontamination. Another possible source of information is an experienced cleaning/decontamination facility that has been verified by an independent third party. Once you have instructions for decontamination, PPE manufacturers can provide feedback on the recommendations regarding the effect on the component materials.

Globe does not EVER accept any gear for cleaning, inspection or repair that is suspected of exposure to certain contaminants, including, but not limited to, magnesium, liquid PCBs, CBRN terrorism agents, and asbestos. It is recommended that all gear exposed to these contaminants be immediately disposed of in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations. Please note that the dealer, distributor, or other entity (customers or ISPs) returning gear to Globe for repairs is responsible for notifying Globe of any known or suspected contaminants that the turnouts may have been exposed to which could present a health and safety risk to employees or our facility. In the case of biohazard contaminants, if Globe has agreed to accept the gear, it must be properly bagged and labeled as such. In the event that Globe receives gear that is not properly marked as biohazard or if the gear is determined as possibly presenting a potential health and safety concern, the appropriate entity will be so notified.

NVFC 2013 Gear Donation Program

Globe, DuPont, and the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) have teamed up once again to provide new gear to volunteer fire departments in need. The application period is now open for eligible departments to apply for up to four sets of gear. Up to 52 sets will be given away in 2013.

Volunteer departments across the country are facing limited or shrinking budgets and are struggling to provide their personnel with safe, compliant gear. To celebrate our 125th anniversary last year and say thank you to firefighters who dedicate themselves to protecting their communities, we launched this program in 2012. Given the success of last year's program, we are proud to continue our partnership with DuPont and NVFC to implement this much-needed gear donation program that will improve volunteer firefighter safety and performance with the most advanced turnout gear.

To be eligible to apply for a gear donation, departments must be all-volunteer, serve a population of 25,000 or less, be located in the U.S. or Canada and legally organized under state law, and must be a Department or Individual Member of the NVFC. Eligible departments can apply at www.nvfc.org.
